The North Miami Police Department’s “Officers of the Month” for April 2014 are Orestes Torres and Enrique Rivero. Officer Torres has been with the North Miami Police Department for two years and is currently assigned to the Patrol Section, Midnight Shift. Officer Rivero has been with the North Miami Police Department for five years and is currently assigned to the Patrol Section, Midnight Shift. These officers are being recognized for their hard work and dedication to the City of North Miami Police Department. They were nominated by Sergeant Andrew Rossi for the following case:
On Wednesday, March 12, 2014, Officers Torres and Rivero responded to the lobby of the North Miami Police Department and met with a complainant who wanted to report a stolen rental vehicle. While speaking with the complainant, Officer Rivero observed that he was extremely nervous, and his story was inconsistent. Using good interviewing techniques, Officer Rivero was able to convince the complainant to tell the truth as to the status of the vehicle. The complainant then advised that he was offered $300 by an unknown subject to report the vehicle stolen. While Officer Rivero was speaking with the complainant, Officer Torres observed a red Chevy four door parked down the street, just out of view from the lobby.
Officers Torres and Rivero approached the vehicle and found three subjects inside. While speaking to the subjects, Officer Torres recognized that the driver of the vehicle was the alleged renter of the stolen vehicle that was being reported by the complainant. The subject was detained and interviewed by Officer Torres, at which time, the subject confessed to offering the complainant $300 to file the stolen vehicle report. The subject further advised that he was reporting the vehicle stolen because he loaned his friend the vehicle and wanted it back. The subject, who is currently on probation in Broward County for armed robbery, was taken into custody and transported to TGK. The subject had a past out of Broward County for armed robbery, disorderly conduct, and probation violation. His Probation Officer was contacted and advised of the situation.
If not for the quick thinking and keen insight of both Officer Torres and Rivero, a false report that would have put lives in unnecessary danger would have been made.
Officers Orestes Torres and Enrique Rivero were chosen as Officers of the Month for April 2014 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held quarterly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 12:00 Noon.
