The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for November 2014 is Officer Kevin Crespo. Officer Crespo has been with the North Miami Police Department for two years and is currently assigned to the Patrol Section, Day Shift. Officer Crespo is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the City of North Miami Police Department. He was nominated by Sergeant Joseph Kissel for the following case: On Saturday, September 20th, 2014, Officer Crespo was on a routine patrol when two black Mercedes Benz’ with illegal tints were parked side by side on a corner, blocking traffic. He conducted a traffic stop on both of the vehicles because their actions heightened his curiosity due to recent robberies and burglaries in the area.
One of the drivers did not have his driver’s license, and provided a false name, date of birth, and social security number. Through further investigation, Officer Crespo was able to determine the subject’s correct name and vital information, revealing is license to be suspended. This subject was arrested and taken into custody.
On further investigation with the other two subjects in the other vehicle, a strong smell of suspected marijuana was emanating from the vehicle. After the subjects were asked to step out and away from the vehicle, a pat down was conducted yielding suspected fraudulent credit cards. Officer Crespo, alerting recent flyers of fraudulent cards, contacted Detective Abraham Zuniga. Detective Zuniga was able to swipe the cards, showing them to be fraudulent. The subjects willfully and without permission or authorization of these victims were in possession of their personal information with the intent to do fraud. Both of the subjects were arrested and further interviewed by Detective Zuniga.
Through investigation, it was determined that the two subjects were also wanted by Miami Dade Police Detectives, who responded and charged the subjects with thirty (30) counts of fraud. The subjects were subsequently charged with possession of a counterfeit payment instrument, grand theft fraud, receiving money or goods obtained by fraudulent use of credit cards, criminal use of personal identification information, and obtaining credit cards by fraudulent means. The two subjects were charged and held on a bond that was over three hundred thousand (300,000) dollars.
If not for the alert, hard work, and dedication of Officer Crespo, it is unknown as to how many victims may have fallen prey to the increasing fraudulent use of personal information by thieves today.
Officer Kevin Crespo was chosen as Officer of the Month for November 2014 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held quarterly at the Miami Shores Country Club, Wednesday, January 28th, 2014 at noon.
