The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for April 2016 is Officer Angel Requejado. Officer Requejado is a 17-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Uniform Patrol Section, Day Shift. Officer Requejado was nominated by Sergeant Rafael Estrugo for the following case: On March 30th, the North Miami Police Department received an emergency call regarding a subject who was armed with a knife and threatening to stab his mother. Officers were immediately dispatched in an emergency mode.
Officer Requejado was the first officer to arrive on the scene of a violent disturbance call. As he parked and exited his police vehicle, Officer Requejado was confronted by the irate subject, who exited the residence armed, holding four (4) large knives in his hands. The subject held the knives in a threatening manner and began walking rapidly towards Officer Requejado.
Officer Requejado, who was by himself, and in imminent danger, immediately drew his firearm and began to give the subject loud verbal commands to drop the knives and get on the ground. The subject refused to cooperate and continued to walk towards Officer Requejado. The subject was screaming, crying, sweating, and appeared to be experiencing some sort of mental disorder. Officer Requejado continued to order the subject to drop the knives, but the subject refused to comply.
Officer Requejado utilized his expertise and training and remained composed during this threatening and possibly deadly situation. He continued to assess and deescalate the situation by calmly and assertively interacting with the subject from a distance. As back-up officers began to arrive on the scene, Officer Requejado was able to convince the apparent mentally ill subject to drop all four knives. The subject then got down on one knee with his hands in the air. Officer Requejado was then able to fully redirect the subject to the ground and away from the knives. The subject was safely taken into custody. It was later determined that the subject indeed had a history of mental illness and was attempting to commit suicide before Officer Requejado arrived on the scene.
Officer Requejado was successful in calming the subject down in order to provide him with medical assistance. The subject was then transported to a mental crisis facility for evaluation and treatment. Due to Officer Requejado’ s alertness, composure, and quick thinking, a mentally ill subject was safely taken into custody and provided with the necessary medical and psychiatric assistance needed.
Officer Requejado was chosen as Officer of the Month for April 2016 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 12:00 Noon.
