The North Miami Police Department’s “Officers of the Month” for August 2016 are Officer Omar Rolle, a 2-year veteran, and Officer Osvald Salien, a 1-year veteran, at the North Miami Police Department. Both officers are assigned to the Uniform Patrol Section, Midnight Shift. They are being recognized for their hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. They were nominated by Sergeant Andrew Rossi for the following case:

On Monday, August 1, 2016, Officers Rolle and Salien were dispatched in reference to a person attempting to commit suicide. Upon arriving, Officers Rolle and Salien met with the female complainant who advised that her husband was on the back porch of the residence, attempting to hang himself. Officers Rolle and Salien immediately rushed through the residence and out to the porch where they encountered a 22-year old male subject, who was standing on a chair with a noose made of rope hanging from the rafters around his neck. Officers Rolle and Salien rushed to the subject before he was able to step off the chair. The officers held on to the man and removed the noose from around his neck. The subject, who was visibly distraught, was restrained before he could do any harm to himself. Using effective de-escalation techniques, Officers Rolle and Salien were able to calm the subject.

It was later learned that the male subject was distraught over marital problems with his wife and would have indeed followed through on his attempt to end his own life. Officers Rolle and Salien further recognized that the subject, without immediate intervention, would be a danger to himself or others. Determining that the subject indeed met the criteria for an involuntary psychological examination, Officers Rolle and Salien safely transported him to Aventura Medical Center, where he was turned over to medical staff on scene under the Baker Act.

If not for the quick and decisive actions of Officers Rolle and Salien, the subject, who was clearly in a state of crisis, would have tragically ended his life. These officers, demonstrated tremendous restraint and compassion during an extremely intense situation, and safely assured that the distraught subject got the help that he desperately needed.

Officers Omar Rolle and Osvald Salien were chosen as Officers of the Month for August 2016 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 12:00 Noon.
