The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for December 2016, is Detective Alanzo Rhymer. Detective Rhymer is a 17-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Investigative Section. He is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. Detective Rhymer was nominated by Sergeant Milton Reid for the following case:
On Saturday, November 26, 2016, three victims attempted to purchase a PlayStation 4 that was advertised on an app “OfferUp”. When the victims arrived at the agreed upon meeting location, the suspects immediately produced a gun to rob them.
The victims quickly attempted to flee and one of the suspects fired several shots at the victim’s car as they drove away. A bullet entered the back of the driver’s seat without penetrating the entire seat. The victim was bruised in the back, but fortunately not injured further. The other two victims in the vehicle were not harmed. During the course of this investigation, Detective Rhymer noticed similarities to this case and a robbery that was being investigated by another detective that occurred on November 18, 2016.
Detective Rhymer began to investigate this robbery with a level of focus and attention to detail that is unmatched. He searched Facebook for the phone number that the victims used to contact the suspects and found a Facebook page. Detective Rhymer now had a picture of the suspect. In attempt to find a name to go along with the face, Detective Rhymer diligently sorted through scores of booking photos and came across a subject who matched the image on the Facebook page, providing a name and home address.
Detective Rhymer coordinated with the State Attorney’s Office and obtained a subpoena on the phones used by the suspects; this subpoena confirmed that the phones used in the crimes were registered to the subject’s home address listed on his Facebook page.
Detective Rhymer created a photo line-up of the subject and the victims positively identified him as the robbery suspect. Detective Rhymer expediently obtained a search warrant for the subject’s home address and coordinated with the North Miami Police SWAT team to execute that warrant in less than 24 hours. During the execution of the search warrant, the suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery. Also found were the phones used in the robberies and several firearms. Furthermore, Detective Rhymer obtained a full confession from the subject.
Due to Detective Rhymer’s exemplary dedication and relentless pursuit of justice, a violent criminal was captured. Detective Rhymer’s efforts make the City a safer place for everyone.
Detective Alanzo Rhymer was chosen as Officer of the Month for December 2016 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held at Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 12:00 Noon.
