The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for July 2016 is Officer Kevin Crespo. Officer Crespo is a 4-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Uniform Patrol Section, Day Shift. He is being recognized for his dedication to the residents of North Miami. Officer Crespo was nominated by Sergeant Ernesto Reyes for the following case:
On July 2, 2016, Officer Crespo was dispatched to an “in progress” call of an assault, with a knife, on a bus. He quickly responded to the location and approached from the rear of the bus. At that point, Officer Crespo discovered that the elderly victim and the subject were engaged in a struggle. The subject was on top of the seated victim with a utility knife in his hand, attempting to stab the victim. All the other passengers were outside of the bus.
Officer Crespo drew his firearm and gave loud verbal commands for the subject to throw down the knife. The offender complied and threw the knife outside of the bus. At this point, Officer Crespo was still alone without any other police assistance. He ordered the subject to exit the bus and lie down on the ground before applying handcuffs. During the investigation, it was revealed that the victim suffered a stab wound on his leg.
A search, incident to the arrest, revealed that the subject also had marijuana baggies in his possession. The offender has an armed robbery criminal past as well as other misdemeanors. Officer Crespo’s quick response and fast thinking resulted in the quick apprehension of the offender and the preservation of the life and safety of those involved. If not for Officer Crespo’s prudent actions in an intense situation the victim may have been more seriously injured and possibly killed.
Officer Kevin Crespo was chosen as Officer of the Month for July 2016 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 12:00 Noon.
