He is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. Detective Zuniga was nominated by Sergeant James Mesidor for the following incident:
During the month of November in the course of his assigned duties, Detective Zuniga identified several small businesses throughout North Miami that were conspicuously involved in illicit gambling. He further recognized that such activities were orchestrated by individuals involved in organized crime that could lead to additional criminal offenses, such as robbery, extortion, and grand theft. Detective Zuniga immediately and proactively implemented an initiative to conduct criminal investigations at these respective locations. During the course of the investigation, Detective Zuniga utilized undercover officers (UC) and operatives to conduct illicit lottery sales, known as “Boleta” or “Bolet”, from subjects. Detective Zuniga’s investigations have led to the serving of a search warrant, the closure of several illegal establishments, over five arrests, the confiscation of various forms of electronics, and approximately $5,000 in illicit proceeds.
Detective Zuniga handles an array of criminal investigations, many of which are self-initiated. As a senior S.I.U. detective, he has developed a keen sense of awareness in recognizing suspected illicit activities such as organized fraud, street-level narcotics sales, prostitution, and illegal gambling during the course of his proactive duties. Detective Zuniga diligently continues his investigations in identifying additional local locations.
