The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for September 2016, is Officer Bryant Hernandez. Officer Hernandez is a 4-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Uniform Patrol Section, Day Shift. He is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. Officer Hernandez was nominated by Sergeant Crystal Thompson for the following case:
On Saturday, July 30, 2016, Officer Hernandez responded to a call involving a male that was yelling in the hallway of an apartment building. Officer Hernandez made contact with the male, who was inside the apartment, alone in the dark. The male refused to turn on the lights and exit the apartment.
He was observed holding a key in his hand, which he stated was the key of life given to him by God. Officer Hernandez recognized his behavior as odd, due to his mannerisms and him speaking of a New World Order. The male continued to rant, advising that he had found the Devil and that God sent him on a mission to kill him. The male stated the Devil was a certain Presidential Candidate and that he had a group of people that were going to help him complete his mission. Officer Hernandez inquired as to how he would kill the Presidential Candidate and the male pointed to some books on the table and advised that the books tell him how.
Officer Hernandez furthered his investigation by responding to the leasing office to obtain additional information about the subject. The subject identified himself as the owner of the apartment, however, it was later discovered that he was not the owner. Based on Officer Hernandez’s training and military experience, the situation raised a number of red flags. Officer Hernandez documented the incident and notified his supervisor. His report was then forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security, and then sent to the United States Secret Service for a follow up investigation.
On Tuesday, August 2, 2016, a follow up was conducted at the apartment by United States Secret Service Agents, Department of Homeland Security Agents, and the North Miami Police Officers. Contact was made with the apartment owner’s daughter, who advised that the male was admitted to Aventura Hospital under the Florida Baker Act. It was later discovered that the male had previously consumed illegal drugs within the past two weeks, which contributed to his odd behavior. The male was known to be violent and to carry a weapon. The United States Secret Service Agent further advised that he would be placed on a watch list due to his mental instability and threats made against a Presidential Candidate.
As a result of Officer Hernandez’s keen awareness, training, military experience, and investigative skills, he was able to obtain all pertinent information in this case. His actions lead to corroborative effort with the United States Secret Service, Homeland Security, and the Florida Fusion Task Force in order to prevent danger or harm to a Presidential Candidate; thereby, potentially preventing a dangerous situation.
Officer Bryant Hernandez was chosen as Officer of the Month for September 2016 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 12:00 Noon.
