The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for January 2017 is Sergeant Patrick McNally. Sergeant McNally is a 21-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Uniform Support Department, Traffic Safety Unit. He is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. Sergeant McNally was nominated by Assistant Chief Robert Bage for the following event: In the month of December, Sergeant McNally was tasked with preparing an operational plan for the city’s largest special event, the 2017 North Miami Mardi Gras.
An event of this size and magnitude would normally take several months to properly organize and prepare a plan of action. Sergeant McNally was given less than 45 days to prepare for the event with an estimated crowd of 8,000 to 12,000 people.
The event posed several logistical difficulties, which were only complicated with the short time period to prepare for the event. Since the City of North Miami had never had a similar event, Sergeant McNally used his special event experience and prepared a systematic plan of action from scratch. Sergeant McNally was required to coordinate, not only with police personnel, but also with several other service providers both public and private. Many of the service providers had competing interests in the event, and Sergeant McNally had to ensure all their needs were met. He worked tirelessly to coordinate all the moving parts.
The event also demanded one of the largest mobilizations of North Miami Police personnel in history. It required approximately 80 police personnel over two shifts. Sergeant McNally was needed to develop a deployment schedule, which would not affect the regular staffing of officers and would not require any officer to work back to back shifts. In addition to the North Miami police personnel working the event, Sergeant McNally also coordinated with several other local law enforcement agencies to assist with both pre-event planning and staffing during the Mardi Gras.
Not only did Sergeant McNally develop the plan of action for the event but also the lead supervisor during the event. He worked vigorously all day through the rain at times to ensure the event went smoothly and immediately tackled any issue that arose. The event was extremely successful. The plan of action properly place police personnel and had several contingencies if needed. The estimate crowd was just over 10,000 people and only one arrest was made for disorderly conduct.
Sergeant Patrick McNally was chosen as Officer of the Month for January 2017 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 12:00 Noon.
