The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for March 2017 is Officer Duhamel Jeanite. Officer Jeanite is a 11-year veteran at the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Uniform Support Department, Traffic Safety Unit. He is being recognized for his hard work and dedication to the residents of North Miami. Officer Jeanite was nominated by Sergeant Patrick McNally for the following event:
On Saturday, March 25, 2017, Officer Jeanite volunteered to work the Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park located in the City of Miami. This was a sold out event where multiple bands were scheduled to perform and tens of thousands of spectators were expected to attend. Knowing the magnitude of this event, the City of Miami Department contacted North Miami Police Department and requested assistance from our officers.
Officer Jeanite arrived at the event and was eventually assigned to the front stage. This area is “Ground Zero” for these types of events because officers assigned to these areas must be vigilant and watchful at all times. During one of the performances, Officer Jeanite and his partner, Sweetwater Officers Solino, observed a 6’2, 280 pound male elbowing, pushing and shoving other attendees who were trying to watch the band that was performing on the stage. In fear for the safety of the other patrons who were being shoved, Officer Jeanite and Officer Solino approached the male subject in an attempt to remove him from the crowd that he was terrorizing. Once the officers approached, the subject immediately struck Officer Solino on the side of his face with a closed fist causing Officer Solino to fall to the ground onto his back. The subject attempted to continue his attack on Officer Solino but Officer Jeanite did not allow this. Officer Jeanite protected Officer Solino, who was on the ground and in a position of helplessness by absorbing the punches himself. Officer Jeanite was struck several times on his forearms and elbows while simultaneously returning punches to the subject. Officer Jeanite received several more punches while embracing the subject and directing him to the ground. The subject nor Officer Jeanite was going to quit. The two repeatedly exchanged blows while on the ground. Officer Jeanite was determined to hold the subject on the ground and preventing him from hurting anyone else. Officer Solino regained his composure and rejoined the fight while Officer Jeanite and the subject were on the ground. The two officers eventually managed to handcuff the subject and escort him out of the crowd.
As a result of the subject’s violent behavior, Officer Jeanite’s forearm was broken requiring a permanent metal rod to be surgically implanted by his shattered bone. His leg was also injured, resulting in his inability to walk without crutches. While Officer Jeanite was in the hospital, Officer Solino responded for an emotional reunion. He thanked Officer Jeanite for saving his life and “being the wall” that protected him from this criminal.
Officer Duhamel Jeanite was chosen as Officer of the Month for March 2017 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 12:00 Noon.
